The global cryptocurrency business is going through one of its serious security problems after Binance said there was a cyberattack involving about $6.3 billion in digital money. This event happened on October 29 2026 and it has led to questions about the security of centralised cryptocurrency exchanges the way customer money is protected and the increasing skill of cyber operations linked to countries.

Binance, the cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume confirmed the security problem on October 30. The company said its first investigation suggested that hackers might have entered through a laptop that belonged to a DevOps engineer. The access is said to have let them reach an internal service container and submit withdrawal requests.

The size of the event could make it the biggest cryptocurrency theft ever recorded, beating the about $1.5 billion stolen from Bybit in February 2025.

How the Binance security problem happened

According to blockchain analysis the attackers moved billions of dollars in money from Binance-controlled wallets across several blockchain networks. A large part of the transfers happened within 20 minutes.

Binances early technical explanation said that a compromised engineers laptop and unauthorised access to an internal service container were the cause. The exchange said it found no proof that wallet private keys were taken.

However the company later said that investigators had found ways in. This means the event might have involved a complicated attack than the first explanation suggested.

The difference is important. A private key problem and an attack on the systems that approve withdrawals are two security issues. Even if wallet keys are not directly taken, problems with internal access controls, transaction approval steps or software systems can give attackers a chance.

Binance has said it will release a technical explanation after the investigation is done and the facts have been checked.

North Korea-linked hackers are suspected

Blockchain analysis firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis have linked the attack to North Korea-linked cyber actors. Investigators have said they found features to earlier attacks connected to the TraderTraitor group, which is linked to North Korean state-sponsored cyber activity.

The link has consequences because cryptocurrency theft has become a major issue for international financial security. North Korea-linked hacking groups have been connected to digital asset thefts before including the 2025 Bybit event.

However the link should be considered carefully. Blockchain analysis firms use transaction patterns, wallet connections, infrastructure and similarities with attacks to judge who is responsible. These findings can give clues but they are not the same as a full law enforcement investigation or a court decision.

Binance has said it is working with law enforcement and blockchain analysis partners to find those and track the affected money.

About $3 billion in money has been frozen

One of the developments has been the effort to stop the stolen money from being moved or turned into other digital currencies.

Binance said that about $3 billion in money had been frozen on the blockchain by working with blockchain partners. Stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle were among the companies that helped freeze money connected to the event.

An independent blockchain analysis firm called Elliptic said it had checked about $2.84 billion in money in its October 30 analysis. The difference between the estimates is because of when the investigations were done and how they were done, as tracking and freezing money was still happening.

Freezing currency is not the same as getting it back. Stablecoin issuers can stop tokens at certain addresses but digital assets like Bitcoin and Ether can't be frozen by a single issuer. Attackers might also try to exchange the money move it between networks or use services that make it hard to track.

As a result the remaining money is a problem for investigators and the whole cryptocurrency business.

Binance promises to pay for customer losses

Binance has said that customer money is safe and that it will pay for all the losses from the event. The company said it will use its Secure Asset Fund for Users known as SAFU along with its money.

The SAFU fund was created as a plan for users. However the reported $6.3 billion loss is much bigger than the funds $1 billion reserve. So Binance’s promise also means using company money, not SAFU.

The exchange first stopped deposits and withdrawals while it did security checks and ended the access to the addresses. Later updates said that deposits had started again. Withdrawals were still stopped while the company worked on better security.

Binance also promised to share an updated Proof of Reserves after fixing the issues. These reports can help show what money the exchange has. They don't prove that every part of its security and controls is working well.

Crypto markets feel more worried again

The event has caused pressure in the cryptocurrency markets away. Bitcoin and Ether went down after the news and Binance-linked BNB also had a lot of selling. Shares of some cryptocurrency-related companies that are publicly traded went down during trading.

The market response shows more than the amount of money lost. Centralised exchanges are very important in trading storing and providing liquidity for cryptocurrency. If investors start to doubt if big platforms can protect money well confidence could drop across the digital asset market.

The event also shows how important it is to have security. Cryptocurrency exchanges must protect not private keys but also employee devices, internal software, withdrawal approval systems, privileged accounts and monitoring systems.

For regulators the break-in could lead to checking of how exchanges keep money safe how resilient they are, how good their cybersecurity is and how open they are about protecting customer money. Any new rules will depend on what the investigations find and what the different regulators decide.

A big warning for the cryptocurrency business

The Binance event shows how a security problem in a financial technology company can cause problems that go far beyond the company itself. The size of the theft the involvement of blockchain networks and the difficulty of getting the money back show how hard it is to protect modern cryptocurrency systems.

Binances decision to pay for customer losses might help stop worries about user money.. Confidence will depend on how good the investigation is, how much money can be found and how well the security changes the company makes work.

For the industry the message is clear: good wallet technology is not enough. Exchanges need to secure the people, devices, software systems and approval processes that control how digital money moves.

As the investigations go on the total financial loss how much money can be. Who is responsible will stay important questions. The answers could affect how exchanges, regulators and big investors think about asset security, for many years.
