Indian shares opened lower on Thursday as crude oil held above $110 a barrel, adding pressure on a market already weighed down by rising inflation and a rate increase from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The Sensex fell 366 points, or 0.50%, to 73,343 at the open, and the Nifty shed 124 points to 22,688, India TV reported. Corporate earnings, now being reported, are the third test.

Oil and the market

The Sensex closed at 73,709.69 on Wednesday, down 0.19%, and the Nifty at 22,811.35, down 0.34%, according to Goodreturns. Selling was sharper in the broader market, with the Nifty Midcap 100 down 1.58% and the Smallcap 100 down 2.37%. The site cited rising crude, US-Iran tensions and persistent foreign institutional outflows.

Reports of Thursday's intraday low differ. One aggregator, citing Mint, said the Sensex fell more than 700 points to 73,005, while other digests described a fall of about 600 points. Final closing levels were not available at the time of writing.

Brent has traded between $97 and $112 this month and was near $108 on 21 October, Transport Topics reported. Geojit, a brokerage, noted that India relies on imports for nearly 90% of its crude needs, which typically strains corporate margins, the current account deficit and the rupee. Goodreturns showed the rupee near 94.4 to the dollar.

Inflation and the RBI

India's retail inflation rose to 5.54% in September from 4.83% in August, driven largely by food, according to figures released on 12 October by the statistics ministry. Food inflation reached 7.74%. The reading is on a new consumer price index series with 2024 as the base year, and is the highest since October 2024, according to Adda247.

The RBI raised its repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on 7 October, its first increase since February 2023, and moved its stance to calibrated tightening. The decision was unanimous. The central bank now projects 2026-27 inflation at 5.2%, with 6.0% expected in the October–December quarter, according to a summary of its statement. The next policy meeting is scheduled for 2 to 4 December.

September was the fourth straight month above the RBI's 4% target, though still inside its 2% to 6% tolerance band, Dynamite News reported. The same report said the RBI acknowledged that evidence of supply-side pressures becoming entrenched remained limited.

Earnings: strong numbers, thinner margins

Results have so far been strong. Nifty 50 companies reported average profit growth of 18% in the June quarter, a 10-quarter high, according to five brokerages cited in an August report. Those brokerages also flagged margin pressure from higher costs of metals, crude derivatives, palm oil, freight and wages. They said banks faced compressed net interest margins and that IT firms faced pricing pressure linked to artificial intelligence.

Sector results were uneven. Hindalco, Reliance Industries, JSW Steel, ONGC and Bharti Airtel were among the strongest performers, analysts said, while Geojit noted that oil marketing and refining companies lagged because of margin pressure tied to volatile crude. In July, Phillip Capital forecast that EBITDA margins excluding oil and gas could contract by more than 220 basis points year on year in the June quarter, according to 5paisa. That was a forecast, and the sources reviewed do not give the actual figure.

For the September quarter, brokerage previews published on 8 and 9 October put Nifty 50 earnings growth at 21% to 27%, with Motilal Oswal at the top end, a summary on the Univest platform said. It named banks, metals, telecom and autos as the main contributors. The same summary noted that part of the growth comes from a weak base a year earlier.

IT is expected to be softer. TCS opened the season on 8 October, and a preview by ZiroMarket said brokerages expected muted revenue growth and a possible cut to Infosys' FY27 guidance. Infosys reports on 23 October.

Estimates have been cut

Analysts have already adjusted for higher energy prices. NSE trimmed FY27 earnings estimates for its top 200 companies by 0.9%, Upstox reported on 17 September. JM Financial calculated that Nifty 50 FY27 earnings per share estimates fell 9.3% between August 2025 and August 2026, though August itself brought a 0.1% rise, with 23 of the 50 companies receiving upgrades.

JM Financial has also cautioned that estimates have often been revised down. It noted that consensus expected about 15% Nifty earnings growth at the start of FY25, while actual growth was 3.4%.

How the three pressures connect

Higher oil raises costs and inflation. Inflation prompted the RBI to raise rates, which can lift funding costs and weigh on valuations. Earnings have to be strong enough to offset all three, which is why this quarter's results are being read as much for margins and guidance as for headline profit. That reading is analysis, not a finding from any one source.

What is not established

None of the sources reviewed isolates how much of the market's decline is due to crude, inflation or earnings expectations. Brokerage forecasts are estimates and have a record of revisions. Several figures come from secondary or blog summaries, and I did not verify foreign investor flow data. This article is information, not investment advice.

What to watch next

Infosys reports on 23 October, followed by more bank, auto and consumer results through early November. Brent and developments in the Strait of Hormuz remain the main external swing factor. The next US Federal Reserve meeting is at the end of October, and India's October inflation data is due in mid-November, ahead of the RBI's December meeting.
