Apple's Indian subsidiary reported ₹650 crore in software development revenue in FY26, from no revenue in that category a year earlier, exchange4media reported on 26 October, citing the company's financial filings. The figures suggest Apple's India operations now cover more than iPhone manufacturing support. They do not show how large its Indian software teams are.

What the filings show

Apple Operations India, which began commercial operations in FY25, reported total revenue of more than ₹1,400 crore in FY26, up from ₹318 crore, according to the report. Manufacturing support revenue nearly doubled to ₹520 crore from ₹282 crore. The subsidiary's other activities include procurement support, project management and global support services.

Net profit rose to ₹103 crore from ₹28 crore. By this article's own arithmetic, software development accounted for roughly 46% of revenue if the total is taken as ₹1,400 crore, though the report gives only a "more than" figure.

About 97% of the subsidiary's activities were carried out for Apple's global operations, including Apple Operations International and Apple Inc., according to the filings as reported. That suggests the unit is serving the wider group rather than the Indian consumer market.

What the filings do not show

The report said the disclosures do not identify the projects undertaken, the number of employees, the locations of the teams or how much of the work is product engineering rather than software support or project management. They also do not establish whether the ₹650 crore is new work arriving in India, responsibilities transferred from another Apple entity or a change in how existing work is reported.

Mohit Yadav, founder of business intelligence firm Alt Info, said the revenue mix could indicate a broader restructuring and that Apple may be positioning the Indian entity as an engineering and support hub. The report noted this reading is consistent with the numbers but not independently established by them. No Apple statement appears in the coverage reviewed. I did not see the filings themselves.

The figures also do not measure India's share of Apple's global operations. The sources reviewed give no such percentage.

Background

Apple's engineering presence in India predates this filing. In 2016, it announced a Maps development office in Hyderabad that it said would create about 4,000 jobs, according to the Associated Press. The same year, it announced an iOS app design and development accelerator in Bengaluru, YourStory noted.

Storyboard18 said Apple Operations India was set up in 2024 to focus on research, design, testing and engineering, building on the Hyderabad centre and expanded Bengaluru operations.

Apple's careers site points to current demand. Listings for India dated October 2026 included roles in Bengaluru and Hyderabad for software engineers working on AI, site reliability engineers, and engineers for Find My and retail systems. Listings do not show how many people have been hired.

Wider context

Leadership has changed. John Ternus, Apple's hardware engineering chief, became chief executive on 1 September, and Tim Cook moved to executive chairman, according to a workforce-statistics site citing Apple's announcement. YourStory reported that Cook described himself as "over the moon" about India growth on one of his last earnings calls as chief executive.

YourStory also said the challenge on the manufacturing side is to make India a larger source of components, engineering expertise and supplier capacity, not just final assembly. For scale, Apple reported about 166,000 full-time equivalent employees worldwide as of September 2025, with engineering roles making up around 41% of the workforce, according to a summary of its annual report.

Why it matters

For India, engineering work would add a layer to a presence that has centred on assembly. If Apple's Indian engineering work grows, it could deepen the country's role in the company's supply chain and product development. That is an inference: the numbers confirm revenue growth, not headcount or the seniority of the work.

What is not established

The sources do not confirm team sizes, locations or the type of software work. Most coverage of the revenue figure repeats a single report, and one summary was AI-assisted. Figures were reported in rupees, and the underlying filings were not reviewed.

What to watch next

Next year's filings should show whether software revenue holds or grows and may add detail on employees and capital spending. Watch for Apple announcements of new offices or hiring targets in India, and for any comment on how the new chief executive views the country's role. Hiring data from Apple's India careers page may offer early signals.
